The Chinese auto giant XPeng has declared that it has obtained design certification for its next-generation flying vehicle. With its flying cars, the company's eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) division, Aero HT, is getting closer to starting commercial operations in China. The X3-F codename for the upcoming air module vehicle brings it one step closer to flight certification and customer deliveries.
At the company's annual 1024 event last year, XPeng unveiled two new flying car concepts: the X3 and a modular EV that had the capacity to carry a separate eVTOL in its rear. The X3 was capable of autonomous driving, parking, and takeoff, having gained extensive knowledge from the company's previous X2 "flying car." Currently under development, the modular electric vehicle is expected to enter production in 2025, ahead of customer deliveries in China.
The road and the sky can be traversed simultaneously by AeroHT's new modular eVTOL. "One step closer" to accomplishing this goal, according to the company, is its modular flying car. Central and Southern China's Civil Aviation Administration (CAAC) has approved the X3-F EV/eVTOL combo's Type Certificate application.
The eVTOL air module portion of the upcoming offering, which consists of a 6x6 All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) ground modular for the EV, is specifically covered by the certification. XPeng AeroHT reports that the company is eager to pursue airworthiness certification now that it has obtained the design certification from CAAC.
AeroHT is expected to commence the production of the modular eVTOL at scale after receiving approval, with customer deliveries anticipated to start in late 2025.
