Two AI models were trained by Apple using Google's hardware, according to a study

An Apple research paper released on Monday revealed that the company built two essential parts of its artificial intelligence software infrastructure for its next suite of AI tools and capabilities using Google chips rather than industry leader Nvidia.

It's noteworthy that Apple chose to rely on Google's cloud infrastructure because Nvidia makes the most sought-after AI chips.

Nvidia holds about 80% of the market, including chips produced by Google, Amazon.com, and other cloud computing giants.

Apple did not state clearly in the study report that it did not employ Nvidia chips, but it did not make any mention of Nvidia hardware in its explanation of the hardware and software infrastructure of its AI tools and capabilities.

Apple remained silent on Monday.

The manufacturer of the iPhone claimed to have employed two varieties of Google's tensor processing unit (TPU), which are arranged in sizable chip clusters, to train its AI models.

Apple utilized 2,048 TPUv5p chips to create the AI model that would run on iPhones and other devices. Apple used 8,192 TPUv4 processors for its server AI model.

Nvidia concentrates its efforts on so-called graphics processing units (GPUs), which are extensively used for AI endeavors, rather than designing TPUs.

In contrast to Nvidia, which offers its systems and processors as stand-alone items, Google offers TPU access via its Google Cloud Platform. To use the chips, customers that are interested in purchasing access must develop software via Google's cloud platform.

This week, Apple is distributing some of Apple Intelligence to its beta users.

Although Apple began using TPU processors in June, it wasn't until Monday's research article that the company revealed the complete extent of its reliance on Google technology.

Nvidia declined to comment, while Google did not respond to a request for comment.

In the paper, Apple's developers stated that with Google's processors, they could create models that were even larger and more advanced than the two they covered.

During its June developer conference, Apple revealed a number of new artificial intelligence technologies, one of which was the software's integration of OpenAI's ChatGPT technology.

During regular trading on Monday, the shares of the Cupertino, California-based corporation decreased by 0.1% to $218.24 dollars.
