The famous Tacoma pickup, which has been made entirely in Mexico for nearly 20 years, will enter production of its fourth generation in 2024, according to Toyota Motor de México.
This marks a significant turning point for the Mexican auto industry and illustrates the advancements achieved in the country's ability to produce and distribute high-quality automobiles.
In 2004, the nation's history of producing this pickup began with the production of only bedplates at the TMMBC plant in Baja California. A year later, in 2005, the plant started producing the entire Tacoma line. In the coming weeks, production will surpass the 2 million unit mark, which is now very near.
"Our engineering, design, and production teams have worked together for years to research, develop, and produce the new generation Tacoma. Oscar Villarreal, president of Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Baja California, expressed his excitement at providing customers with a dependable and adaptable car option that goes above and beyond their expectations in every way."
"As our beloved Tacoma has positioned itself in the preference of consumers throughout North America, we are proud to be a spearhead in the development of the automotive industry in our country," said Francisco Garcia, president of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Guanajuato.
In the first year of production, the company anticipates producing over 283,000 units of the new generation Tacoma, taking into account both the Baja California and Guanajuato plants. This will be a 13.2% increase over the 250,000 units produced in 2023—of which 136,000 were produced in Baja California and approximately 113,000 in Guanajuato.
Despite the fact that the Baja California plant can only produce 166,000 units, while the Guanajuato plant can produce 200,000 units, it is anticipated that this year's production from both plants will be nearly equal.
Over the course of the final two months of 2023, the company spent US$328 million retooling the fourth generation Tacoma in Guanajuato. Furthermore, the new plant, which is adjacent to the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Guanajuato (TMMGT) assembly plant, was funded with US$180 million by Metalsa, its Mexican Tier 1 supplier.
Tacoma sets a new standard for performance, design, and technology. The Japanese company's commitment to economic growth, the creation of high-quality jobs in the nation and its various regions, and meeting the needs and preferences of domestic customers is reflected in its local production.
