The Information said Thursday that OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT, has recently contemplated creating a web browser that would work with its chatbot and independently explored or made agreements to power search services.
According to the report, which cited individuals who have seen product prototypes or mockups, OpenAI has discussed the search product with website and app developers like Conde Nast, Redfin, Eventbrite, and Priceline.
Google, which controls the majority of the browser and search market, may face off against the Sam Altman-led company as a result of the move. With SearchGPT, OpenAI has already made its foray into the search industry.
Since the debut of ChatGPT in late 2022, Alphabet (GOOGL.O), the parent company of Google, has been working to increase its AI capabilities. Last year, it responded with Gemini, a generative AI chatbot.
After ending almost 5% lower on Thursday, Alphabet's shares were down around 1% in extended trade.
Following the U.S. Department of Justice's argument that Google should sell its Chrome browser in order to break its monopoly on internet search, the company's hold on the browser industry grew unstable.
According to the Information story, which cited people who were briefed on the matter, OpenAI has also talked about powering artificial intelligence features on Samsung-made (005930.KS) and opens new tab devices. OpenAI is a major business partner of Google.
The business already has a deal with Apple (AAPL.O), whereby OpenAI technology powers the iPhone manufacturer's "Apple Intelligence" capabilities on new handsets.
However, according to the Information report, OpenAI is far from releasing a browser.
