The dual SIM RCS feature in Google Messages is finally being widely implemented

  • 15-January-2025

For a while now, Google has been working to add dual SIM RCS compatibility to Google Messages. In January 2024, the functionality was initially made available. Then, for some people, it appeared intermittently throughout the year until abruptly ceasing to function or going away. Although it appeared to be a restricted release, Google Messages users in the US also reported receiving the capability a few months ago. It appears that Google is finally implementing dual SIM RCS compatibility in its messaging app on a large scale following nearly a year of testing.

On Reddit, many Google Messages users indicate that dual-SIM RCS is now available to them. The majority of them reported that after installing the most recent Google Messages build from the Play Store, the feature began to function. Dual SIM RCS functionality is reportedly also being introduced in the US, and multiple users have confirmed that they were able to get it to function on AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon networks.

You may have a better texting experience on both of the numbers connected to your phone with Dual SIM RCS. In the past, RCS only allowed you to register one number, therefore you had to use SMS texting for the other phone.

Install the most recent Google Messages update from the Play Store if your Android phone has two SIM cards. After that, you should see RCS enabled for both numbers when you navigate to Google Messages settings → RCS Chats. Surprisingly, Apple has supported dual SIM RCS messaging since the day it introduced the capability, even though it reluctantly supports RCS.

Google is working on a number of Google Messages enhancements

The issue with Google is that, like in the past, it may quietly remove the feature. Since dual SIM RCS functionality has been widely implemented, the chances of this occurring today appear to be minimal.

Along with the option to add a custom photo to contacts, Google Messages is gradually introducing support for dual SIM RCS. By doing this, you can replace the display picture they may have uploaded while creating their profile. Additionally, Google is working on adding cross-platform encrypted messaging capability for MLS (Messaging Layer Security) to Google Messages.
