The Critical Role of the ENT Specialist in Head and Neck Cancer Detection and Treatment

Dr. Ramya Bharathi, is an ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) surgeon and Otolaryngologist at Tufts Medical Center, Boston, MA.

Early detection is crucial in the battle against head and neck cancers, she says. 

“ENT specialists can play a critical role in this aspect, often being the first to recognize the warning signs during routine examinations or when patients present with specific symptoms such as persistent sore throat, hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, or unexplained weight loss.”

She emphasizes the importance of early detection: "Catching these cancers early can significantly improve treatment outcomes. We are trained to identify even the subtlest symptoms that others might overlook." 

Dr Bharathi was born in India and grew up in Toronto and New York. She attended undergrad at New York University and medical school in St. Louis, Missouri, where she graduated with Distinction in Research for her Doctor of Medicine degree. 

Dr. Bharathi also received the Gorowny O. Broun Award in Internal Medicine.

She has appeared in 10 peer-reviewed publications and has been a collaborator in seven oral presentations in her field of expertise.

Dr. Bharathi is highly regarded as an active participant in academic forums and a member of key medical societies, reflecting her deep commitment to otolaryngology.

She says advancements in diagnostic technology have greatly enhanced the ability of ENT specialists to accurately diagnose head and neck cancers: “Imaging techniques such as CT scans, MRIs, and PET scans, along with sophisticated biopsy procedures, provide detailed views of the affected areas, allowing for more accurate diagnoses and tailored treatment plans,” she says.

Dr. Bharathi adds: "These advanced diagnostic tools are essential in our work. They enable us to understand the extent of the disease and plan the most effective treatment approach for each individual patient."

Treatment of head and neck cancers often requires a multidisciplinary approach, combining surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. 

ENT specialists collaborate closely with oncologists, radiologists, and other healthcare professionals to develop comprehensive, personalized treatment plans.

Surgical intervention, a common first step, can range from minimally invasive procedures to more extensive surgeries, depending on the cancer's location and stage. 

ENT surgeons are skilled in techniques that aim to remove the cancer while minimizing the impact on speech, swallowing, and appearance.

Dr. Bharathi cites radiation therapy and chemotherapy as key tools in the ENT arsenal. These treatments are often used in conjunction with surgery or as standalone treatments, depending on the patient's specific circumstances.

Dr Bharathi says: “ENT specialists can now combine their skills with advances in technology and treatment approaches, which offers patients the best possible outcomes. 

“I find it is important to be adaptable and resilient is essential, especially when dealing with difficult cases.

“It is the mental stimulation, challenge, and the impact on people's lives of the service I provide as an ENT specialist that drives me. I value making a difference in the community and find my job highly rewarding as a result.”

Dr. Alex Marston is an Assistant Professor at Tufts University School of Medicine, as well as a facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, a pediatric otolaryngologist, and a pediatric ear, nose, and throat doctor.
