Nest Protect will soon be supported by the Google Home app

  • 15-January-2025

Would you kindly switch off the lights on the last device to exit the Nest app? The time has finally come for Google to reveal that the Nest Protect smoke and CO alarm will be moved to the Google Home app. According to a Google blog post, this means you'll be able to receive alerts and notifications for both quiet alarms and your alarm directly through Google Home. The Nest app is no longer required for any device, but you can still use it—at least for the time being.

After Google's efforts over the past few years to fully convert its Nest cameras and other devices to the Home app, the Nest Protect was the final gadget that could only be viewed and operated from the Nest app. Although the firm has stated that it will maintain the Nest app in maintenance mode indefinitely, this action will allow Google to ultimately sunset the app.

Users of Google Home will be able to use the new Nest Protect feature in Public Preview on Android this week and iOS "soon." Google claims that it will make the following capabilities possible:

  • Get alerts for smoke and carbon monoxide emergencies and warnings.
  • Receive important status notifications about device problems or battery health.
  • Run a system-wide safety check and see when alarms were last tested.
  • Establish a timetable for automated sound check testing while you're not at home.
  • Change your setup: Modify alarm-specific and system-wide settings
  • Use the emergency alarm card to view your camera's live feeds.
  • E911 calling is available to Nest Aware members in the United States. Even if you're not at home, you may use the Google Home app to make a fast call to an emergency call center nearby.

The Google Home app will now enable smart locks connected through Matter, including the option to configure passcodes, in addition to the Nest upgrades. On Android, the lock upgrades are being released via the app's "Public Preview" function; iOS support will follow in early 2025.

As a result, additional manufacturers' locks will be compatible with Google Home, adding features like automated locking and passcode management to the app. According to Google, depending on the lock manufacturer, not every feature will be compatible with every Matter lock. Below is a summary of the additions that will be made:

  • Passcode Management: By easily sharing and modifying passcodes with family members and visitors, you can control who has access to your house.
  • One-touch entry: By enabling one-tap entry, you may remotely lock or open your door from the Home app with a single tap of a button, eliminating the need to enter your passcode.
  • Select the amount of time your lock should wait before relocking on its own.
  • Vacation option: This option locks the keypad, making it impossible to unlock with the touchpad from the outside.
  • One-touch locking: Press the lock's button or touchpad to lock the door.
  • Push alerts for occurrences involving locks
