In order to take advantage of the satellite internet constellation in low Earth orbit (LEO) that is Starlink, a product of the American aerospace company, South Korean cellular services provider LG Uplus Corp. will collaborate with Space Exploration Technologies Corp., also referred to as Space X. Future alternatives with unlimited coverage are frequently mentioned, such as LEO satellites and satellite cellular services.
The manufacturer of Starlink, Space X, and LG Uplus recently concluded negotiations, according to people with knowledge of the arrangement. LG Uplus took part directly in the negotiations with Space X, whereas other mobile carriers involved their affiliates.
In November 2022, Space X established Starlink Korea LLC as a subsidiary for the Starlink service in South Korea. The subsidiary recently submitted an application to the Korean government for business registration.
The Ministry of Science and ICT will probably begin its qualification review in response to the application, assessing the standard of the Starlink services, terms pertaining to user protection, and other aspects before making an approval decision.
Industry analysts said Starlink would have a competitive advantage in places without access to dependable wired Internet and Wi-Fi, such as at sea and in mountainous areas, even though the company's services might not be as good as the current fifth-generation (5G) and LTE mobile wireless internet offered by traditional carriers.
