Google's VPN is now available on the Pixel tablet

  • 28-November-2024

Previously available only on Pixel 7 and subsequent smartphones, Google's built-in VPN service—better known as VPN by Google—is now being made available to other smartphones.

For example, Google implemented VPN by Google directly into Android after discontinuing its Google One app VPN service, and it started releasing it with the December 2022 Pixel Feature Drop. The app was momentarily accessible for download on the Pixel Tablet during its original release, however it lacked support. After updating to the Android 15 November patch, users who have kept the app since then or who just sideloaded it (for whatever reason) claimed that it started working.

Similar results were revealed by Mishaal Rahman in a different research for Android Authority, which showed that Google automatically downloaded and installed a VPN on customers' Pixel tablets running Android 15 QPR2 Beta 1.

Unexpectedly, the app now works flawlessly on the Pixel Tablet without requiring Android 15 QPR2 Beta 1. 9to5Google brought attention to the development, stating that users who haven't sideloaded the software can now download it straight from the Play Store listing.

It's important to note that Google has not revised their support guide or formally acknowledged the extension. Nevertheless, we can independently verify that the software works as planned and is accessible for download by users running stable Android 15.

Google's indications are mixed

This occurs shortly after it was revealed that Google canceled the highly anticipated Pixel Tablet 2 due to financial difficulties. Given that this isn't the first time the tech giant has discontinued a tablet line, the disaster, which has left Pixel Tablet customers with a foul taste in their mouths, demonstrates Google's lack of dedication. It's important to remember, though, that even if it does eliminate the potential for the Pixel Tablet series, Pixel Tab users will probably not be left on their own.

The launch of 'Hold near to cast,' together with Google's VPN debut, suggests that the tech giant may be interested in improving the software on its tablets, with a possible Pixel Tablet 2 in the works.
