Google has added 12 languages spoken by ethnic minorities in Russia to its translation service, as part of a big new upgrade released on Thursday.
Among the 110 new languages, Google Translate will now support Bashkir, Chechen, Udmurt, and Yakut.
In addition to Tatar, which was added in 2020, the latest update from the US tech giant now includes Crimean Tatar, which is separate from Tatar spoken in Russia's republic of Tatarstan.
Google demonstrated Thursday's upgrade with a Chechen-language translation of the words "Our mission: to enable everyone, everywhere to understand the world and express themselves across languages."
The company stated it employed its own powerful AI language technology to launch its "largest expansion ever."
“As technology advances, and as we continue to partner with expert linguists and native speakers, we’ll support even more language varieties and spelling conventions over time,” Google said in its announcement.
