Ahead of the impending rollout of Android Automotive by Hyundai and Kia, the Hyundai Motor Group recently signed an agreement to integrate Google Maps into its infotainment system.
Hyundai Motor Group and Google have teamed to integrate data from Google Maps into Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis automobiles, the company announced today. According to Hyundai, the rollout will begin with Kia automobiles in North America and then move on to Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis cars worldwide.
Although the precise date of this distribution is unknown, it seems to be distinct from the introduction of Android Automotive in Hyundai automobiles. The fact that the Google Maps "Places API" is being used suggests that this collaboration is primarily focused on location data rather than navigation.
Hyundai says:
The Hyundai Motor Group (the Group) is extending its collaboration with Google in order to provide infotainment and navigation experiences of the future. Along with the ease of the Android Automotive Operating System, drivers of new Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis cars will soon have access to up-to-date information about 250 million locations worldwide via the Google Maps Platform directly in their cars.
The Group will improve navigation accuracy by utilizing Google Maps' extensive location data, which includes new information about company hours, contact details, ratings, reviews, and more, by integrating the Places API (Application Programming Interface) of the Google Maps Platform. These improvements will initially be available to Kia drivers in North America, before being extended to Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis cars worldwide.
The Hyundai Group had earlier declared that it would begin using Android Automotive in 2026.
