Google Maps For IPhones Is Going To Get A Much-needed Driving Enhancement

  • 05-July-2024

Staying under the speed limit when driving using Google Maps may become much easier on iPhone, as an on-screen speedometer has begun to show for some users.

Autoevolution and its readers have discovered the speedometer in both the iOS and CarPlay versions of Google Maps, but no screenshots or images have been captured as of yet.

Because it uses GPS data, this speedometer may be more accurate than your car's speedometer and more easily located for checking forthcoming directions.

Some Android versions of Google Maps already support this, but the addition of the feature to Google Maps' iOS and CarPlay editions is welcome news for Apple users, who can presently only observe speed restrictions for the current road while driving.

Speedometers on mapping apps provide an inconsistent experience

If you don't use Google Maps but want a speedometer in your navigation software right now, Waze provides iPhone and Android users with real-time speed information in a mapping app.

Apple Maps, like Google Maps for most users, can only show speed limitations. However, due to iOS 18, Apple Maps is getting more useful when you're not in your car, with topographic maps, pre-set and custom hiking routes, and more.

Unfortunately, the Google Maps speedometer is currently only available on one of two iPhones, according to one Reddit member. But this will be a very welcome upgrade once it is available on all devices, but it is unclear how long it will take for this function to be fully implemented.
