Google Analytics Introduces a New Segment Sharing Functionality

  • 21-October-2024

Segment sharing is a new feature in Google Analytics 4 that enhances data consistency. Expanded user rights and a shared library are among the new features.

With Google Analytics 4 (GA4), segment sharing features are being introduced by Google.

With this update, individuals who possess Editor or higher rights can now save segments that are accessible to every user on a property.

Users of GA4 were previously required to recreate segments for every exploration report. This was a laborious procedure that might have produced inconsistent results.

This update ensures consistency and efficiency in data analysis by allowing you to construct segments once and share them with others in your organization.

Novelty Features

Several features are introduced in this update:

A centralized collection of segments that include both pre-built and bespoke options is called a shared segment library.
Enhanced Permissions: Provides users with Editor-level access more editing options.
Tools for Segment Management: Added options for adding, modifying, copying, and deleting segments.
The capacity to build audiences using previously saved portions.

Execution

Users of GA4 can access this new feature by going to the Variables pane of the Explore tab and selecting the Segments section.

Clicking the plus icon to start a new segment gives you the option to start from scratch or choose from the pre-existing collection.

You can also access the segment library by going to "Data Display" in the Admin panel.

Google has published a how-to video to assist users in making advantage of these new features.

The following video shows how to create a unique segment for sessions coming from California:

People choose "region" as the dimension.
Declare that the area "contains California."
Give the section a name.
Put it in the library.

Possible Effect

Teams' approach to data analysis in GA4 may change as a result of this release.

Here are a few situations from real life where it could be really important:

The same client segments can be used by the product and marketing teams, keeping everyone informed.
To make sure that all parties are viewing the same data, agencies might set up unique categories for their clients.
E-commerce websites may easily compare results from year to year by saving segments for recurring events like Black Friday.
Uniform segments can be used across all properties by businesses with numerous brands to ensure consistent reporting.
To assist with GDPR and other rules, create categories that automatically remove users depending on their privacy choices.

Ensuring that everyone is speaking the same data language is equivalent to handing them all the same playbook.
