Gemini Has Started Rolling Out To Google Messages, But It Isn't Similar Throughout Android

  • 29-June-2024

Gemini continues to advance across the Google ecosystem. Following the relaxation of restrictions on June 18, the AI is now making its way into Google Messages.

According to MySmartPrice, you'll soon be able to use the tool to "draft messages, have fun conversations, plan events," among other things. However, the form in which Gemini appears on the app may vary from person to person.

The information presented here is consistent with that provided in the June 18 report. Gemini may be accessed by hitting the New Chat icon at the bottom and then selecting the AI in the resulting box. The choice shows at the top of your contact list. However, Android Police reports that it will emerge as a floating action button, or FAB for short.

The Gemini logo will be shown on top of New Chat in the bottom right corner. Don't worry about service differences; it all works the same way. You can ask it any question you want or direct it to give you ideas, such as what to cook for dinner. The primary difference here is that it reduces the number of taps "required to access Gemini inside Google Messages."

Additionally, Android Police notes that the Gemini FAB causes the compose button to shrink as you scroll.

Limitations

When you first access Gemini, you will be directed to a terms and conditions page that explains how the AI operates. It notes that discussions with the function are not encrypted, so be cautious about the information you provide it. Gemini does not have access to any private discussions or know your specific location.

At most, it will have a basic sense of your location "based on your IP, [home], or address". Chats are retained on your smartphone for 18 months by default, but you can set this to three or 36 months.

Before you use artificial intelligence, you must meet certain criteria. The full list is available on Google's Gemini Apps Help page. To give you an idea, you need an Android phone with 6GB of RAM or more, RCS chats enabled, and the device's language set to either English or Canadian French.

Google's Help page also explains how to delete chats before the time limit runs out, as well as how to report content.

Keep an eye out for the patch whenever it arrives. It should be available for Android phones in the coming weeks.
