Garmin updates its flagship smartwatches with new features and bug fixes, but there is a significant change to the ECG

  • 17-January-2024

With its next beta cycle for the Fenix 7 series, Garmin is well and truly under way. Recap: After a six-week break, the company released Beta Version 16.10 to the smartwatch series last week. The company has now released Beta Version 16.11, an update that, despite its iterative revision number change, is packed with improvements.

To put things in perspective, Beta Version 16.10 from Garmin included 24 updates. In comparison, its replacement has nine enhancements, which are as follows:

The watch face becomes stuck when the quick control for the fixed flashlight gets stuck.

Fixed a bug that prevented the date format setting from Garmin Connect from syncing down during device setup.

Issues with the incorrect lap list populating have been resolved.

fixed a potential WeChat Pay crash.

Fixed a potential crash that may have occurred when reversing automated multisport transitions and then saving the activity.

resolved a possible problem where the auto lap banner's total and lap times did not line up.

Better '5 Minute' backlight timeout setting to 'No Timeout' (only for non-AMOLED displays).

Better Daily Suggested Workout watch face data field to display "Dismissed" in the event that the workout is skipped (MARQ 2 Athlete only).

Other enhancements to Find Phone.

Moreover, Beta Version 16.11 updates the GPS software of compatible smartwatches from v7.02 to v9.05. This is mentioned in Garmin's forum post. What modifications the upgrade from v7.02 to v9.05 brings about, though, has not been disclosed by the company. Garmin emphasizes that on Fenix 7 series smartwatches running beta software, it has disabled ECG functionality. This feature can only be used with Release Candidate beta builds or stable updates, for whatever reason.

The Tactix 7 and MARQ Aviator Gen 2 are not compatible with Beta Version 16.11, but it should be available for download right now. Alternatively, all models of the Fenix 7, the Epix 2, Enduro 2, Quatix 7, and the majority of MARQ Gen 2 smartwatches can receive the update.
