FDA-Approved Smart Watch That Can Identify Sleep Apnea Symptoms

  • 15-February-2024

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a popular smart watch manufacturer's sleep apnea detection feature.

Later this year, Samsung Galaxy watches will be able to detect sleep apnea

Samsung Electronics declared on February 10, 2024, that the FDA has officially approved the sleep apnea symptom detector that is available on the Samsung Galaxy Watch and phone.

"The sleep apnea feature allows users over 22 who have not yet received a sleep apnea diagnosis to identify symptoms of moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) over the course of a two-night monitoring period. OSA is a common chronic sleep disorder that frequently remains untreated and undiagnosed. Just record two instances of more than four hours of sleep over the course of ten days to make use of the feature, according to Samsung.

The third quarter of 2024 will see the release of Samsung Galaxy Watches with sleep apnea functionality for customers in the United States, according to Samsung.

According to Mashable, Apple Watches might soon get a sleep apnea detection feature as well.

Trucking and Sleep Apnea

Because almost one-third of drivers have the ailment, the feature may be important to those in the trucking industry. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) reports that mild to sleep apnea affects 28% of commercial truck drivers.

Although a sleep apnea diagnosis does not automatically disqualify a person from operating a commercial vehicle, getting a medical certification may become more challenging.
