CATL Unveils New Electric Vehicle Battery with Nearly 1 Million-Mile Lifespan and 15-Year Duration

  • 04-April-2024

Leading EV battery manufacturer CATL unveiled their latest innovative battery pack, which comes with a 15-year warranty and a maximum range of almost 1 million miles (1.5 million kilometers).

Yutong and CATL Introduce a New Extended-Life Electric Vehicle Battery

In collaboration with Yutung Bus Co., CATL introduced the battery pack, which powers various truck and bus classes as well as commercial vehicles.

The new battery packs will be utilized in upcoming electric vehicles, according to Yutong, one of the biggest bus manufacturers in China. The new long-lasting EV battery has zero degradation during the first 1,000 cycles, according to the company.

The new EV battery pack, constructed with CATL, is covered by a 15-year, 932,000-mile (1.5 million-kilometer) warranty. The long-life battery is referred to by Yutong as an industry first.

Another battery, with a 10-year and 621,000 mile (1 million km) lifespan, was introduced by the bus manufacturer.

In 2012, CATL and Yutong first forged a ten-year alliance to work together on commercial vehicle battery development while investigating novel technologies and materials. The partners intend to use their combined resources to expand internationally by introducing new cars and batteries.

Over 40 countries have already purchased Yutong's buses, which include Italy, France, the UK, Spain, and Qatar. The buses are equipped with CATL batteries.

Progressing Battery Technology

The announcement is the most recent in a line of CATL's recent breakthroughs in battery technology. To develop solid-state batteries, rival BYD and other industry leaders like NIO joined forces with CATL and other Chinese automakers and battery giants in February to form a "all-star" lineup.

China already has a monopoly on the EV battery market; just BYD and CATL account for more than half of the total. SNE Research data (via Bloomberg) indicates that CATL's US and European sales increased by double in the previous year.

Several of the top automakers' electric vehicles, including Tesla, Ford, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Kia, and Toyota, currently use BYD and CATL batteries.

The new "Shenxing Superfast Charging Battery" was introduced by CATL last summer. Ten minutes can add 248 miles (400 km) to the range of the new LFP battery.

By mid-year, CATL plans to drastically cut the price per kWh of LFP battery cells, as promised in January.

NIO and CATL have partnered to develop long-life electric vehicle (EV) batteries, following the announcement of NIO's battery strategy last month. The announcement coincides with the delivery of NIO's first 900V electric drive system, which can add 150 miles (255 km) of range with a five-minute fast charge, which came off the assembly line last week.
