73 points, tying for fourth most in NBA history, Luka Doncic sets a new record for the Mavericks

Recall Luka Doncic's statement that scoring in the NBA is simpler than in Europe?

Friday night, he demonstrated that he almost cannot be stopped, suggesting that he might be correct once more.

Just days after Karl-Anthony Towns scored 62 points for the Timberwolves and Joel Embiid scored 70 for the 76ers on Monday, the Mavericks star erupted for a franchise-high 73 points in a 148-143 victory over the Hawks.

Since the late Kobe Bryant's 81-point performance on January 22, 2006, Doncic's total was the highest point total scored by anyone in an NBA game.

Doncic's 73 points accounted for almost half of the Mavericks' points during their five-point triumph.

In the same game, he not only scored 70 points but also pulled down 10 rebounds, making him the fifth player in NBA history to accomplish both feats.

Doncic scored 70 points in a game, which is only the 15th in NBA history, and was named an All-Star starter for the Western Conference on Thursday.

He is only the tenth player in history to accomplish the feat.

"You know, I was just going?Following the game, Doncic said. What I get from the defense. I attempted to make some plays in the second half because they were always doubling me."

Doncic acknowledged the "MVP" chants he heard during his performance, which at one point even the Hawks supporters at State Farm Arena started to chant in support of him.

He responded, "I heard some MVP [chants] too," when asked if he could hear the audience. "It was lovely."

Jason Kidd, the coach of the Mavericks, praised the team's performance after it was over.

Doncic was chosen as the third overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, and in the four seasons that followed, he was named to the first team of the NBA and five times as an All-Star.

Doncic entered the game averaging 33.6 points, 9.3 assists, 8.5 rebounds, and 48.2 percent from the field, including a career-high 37.3 percent from three-point range.

Now at 25-20, Doncic and the Mavericks are eighth in the Western Conference, but they are getting close to a top-five position in the closely contested rankings.
